Ken LeighIn his early 20’s, Ken apprenticed with several master craftsmen, learning the woodworking trade from men who worked with tools powered by their hands. Acquiring the skills of a craftsman takes time. 35 years later, Ken finds himself passing his knowledge to those who come behind him – the old-time secrets, shortcuts and lost skills. A ‘renaissance man’ in modern times – he uses modern tools to create rustic pieces that reflect his precision, artistry and innate design flair.

Ken spent years honing his craft all the while pursuing the life of a Maine outdoorsman.  He’s canoed the wild Northern Maine rivers, sailed from Maine to Holland, from Canada to the Caribbean. He has hiked New England trails, canoed the Hudson River in New York – from its source in the Adirondacks, to just outside New York City. He’s a licensed Maine Guide. Please don’t give his secret away – but his trips are largely excuses for collecting wood – beaver chews, burls, twisted roots and saplings, birch bark – and other related paraphernalia – nuts, seed pods, feathers, stones, fungus, vines. They’re all fodder for his creative spirit and rustic creations.

Creating rustic pieces requires a unique sensibility for precision, balance and grace. Ken’s ‘renaissance nature’ emerges through every piece he creates. The pieces sing to him and dance themselves together. Ken hears each elements’ distinct voice and orchestrates each piece from its own authentic source.
